Indoor Air Quality / Mold Remediation

The first 20 years of Brickley Environmental projects focused primarily on asbestos and lead paint abatement.

In the past 10 years, our customers have increasingly expressed concerns with indoor air quality (IAQ), and they have asked for our assistance. They want to assure their customers and employees that their indoor air is healthy.

Indoor air quality attention frequently draws a focus on mold. The presence of mold has become a major environmental challenge in indoor environments where prolonged exposure can lead to serious health conditions in humans. Water intrusion into a building, where it is not expected or desirable brings a real potential for mold growth. The incidence of water may be from faulty or deteriorating construction elements (i.e., roof leaks, plumbing failure, poorly-graded property) or defective equipment (i.e., air-conditioner or ice-maker leaks). Contaminants in indoor air are produced by normal work and living activities, which occur in offices, schools, shops, hospital and residences.

Proper treatment and removal of mold hazards requires the careful attention of trained personnel utilizing specific practices, precautions and protective equipment, which effectively minimize any cross-contamination with non-infected areas. Our mold remediation practices meet the highest standards following the guidelines as set forth by IICRC standard S500 (revised 1999), the New York City guidelines (revised April 2000), EPA mold remediation in schools and commercial buildings (March 2001), and including the following steps:

1) We strongly recommend a preliminary survey and scope of work be developed by a trained occupational / environmental health practitioner (industrial hygienist);

2) Pre and post visual documentation, photo or video of the project, as required;

3) Thorough isolation and containment of the infected areas;

4) Negative air-flow equipment to minimize mold in the air;

5) Complete removal of the mold
contaminated materials;

6)
Proper packaging and disposal
of the removed debris;

7) Optional cleaning of air
conditioning duct space, drip pan and coil (Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, (HVAC units) and associated ductwork are a prime breeding ground for bio-contaminants and mold. Lack of maintenance promotes their growth);

8) Verification of cleanliness and post remediation air samples by a licensed 3rd party industrial hygienist;

9) All work completed to satisfy the scope of work defined;

10) Optional installation of the AiraBella© germicidal UV lamp to bring constant assistance in reducing the incidence of mold, bacteria, and virus in indoor air;

BRICKLEY ENVIRONMENTAL works in close cooperation with building inspectors, hygiene specialists and appropriate building evaluation authorities to restore the indoor air quality to a healthy and habitable condition.
